Summary: Often times we expend a lot more time and energy on appearing okay than we do on actually being okay. Maintaining this façade not only draws on the resources you could be using to truly enrich and nurture yourself, it can also be detrimental to your wellbeing, with this ‘public’ face taking on a life of its own, leaving you feeling inauthentic, confused and burnt out. This week the cards ask you to let go of whatever it is you’ve been fiercely maintaining for the sake of appearances or possibly pride. It’s time to put this mask to rest and express how you really feel. Carve out a nook of time and space for yourself, no matter how small, and fight for it.
Everyone likes to feel capable, in control and able to cope with whatever challenges come our way. With the increased stresses and fast pace of modern life however, everyday can feel like a struggle; fighting to find or keep gainful employment, having a safe and comfortable home, ensuring the security of your family and having enough resources so you don’t always feel like you are on the brink of hard times.
Making do with little is a valuable skill, but don’t let it deter you from asking for help when you need it, or even just confessing to a friend that everything is feeling like an uphill battle. Being stoic is valued whereas admitting difficulty is seen as a weakness. This is, for lack of a better word, bullsh*t.
Most of us would of course love to live as the Queen of Pentacles: practical but generous, perfectly able to balance life and work commitments, financially secure, able to perform our daily duties while looking after others without breaking a sweat, AND with a smile on our face. For many of us however, this is not the case, and trying to maintain the visage that it is, is exhausting and ultimately counter productive. Energy is wasted taking care of this image, creating an anxiety-ridden relationship with ourselves, when it should be spent taking care of ourselves. It’s important at this time to also ask if your nurturing of others is coming at the cost of your own health and happiness.
If this sounds at all familiar, the cards are telling you it’s okay to drop it, even for just a little while. You don’t have to be super wo/man. The stresses of maintaining the image that everything is taken care of and wow-don’t-you-make-it-look-so-easy are piling up. Do you know how stress manifests in your life? It can appear in so many different ways for all of us, under-eating, over-eating, hyperactivity, low energy, weakened immune system, insomnia, the list goes on and on. High stress levels are so common-place, people aren’t even always aware of the warning signs they display. Even the tightness of a smile can reveal so much.
It is time to stop and take a personal inventory of your feelings and overall health. Are they roughly aligned with the image you’re presenting? Or do you feel like you’re faking it? If the answer is yes to the second question, you may be thinking that this brave, always-capable mask you’ve been wearing is mostly harmless, but this pretending is hurting you in ways you may not even know yet. Give voice, give face to your anxieties before the mask deteriorates uncontrollably, show yourself, and question if that false visage ever needs putting on again.
